BARBADOS It is worthwhile to note that some of ska's 'founding' members on Jamaica were actually born on surrounding islands: Barbados, Cuba and Trinidad. Barbadian Jackie Opel took his stage name from Jackie Wilson (his favourite singer) and his preferred brand of motor vehicle (as manufactured by the German company Opel). His ska songs accompanied by the Skatalites are true highlights. For the album portrayed here, he was backed by Syd Jones and the Troubadours, the group with which he was resident vocalist up to his untimely death in the late 1960's. Jackie Opel died tragically in a car crash shortly after returning to Barbados from Trinidad where this album was recorded. |
