MARCIA GRIFFITHS/THE REGGAES

What does the legendary Jamaican female reggae singer Marcia Griffiths have to do
with Germany? At the end of the 1960's, she worked with the major record label Phillip
Records in Germany. One website states that Griffiths traveled to that country, where
she recorded two songs in the German language, 'Bleib By Mir' ('Stay Right Here') and
'Alles ist Wunderschön' ('Everything is Beautiful') with a 32-piece orchestra. She
recorded an album in Germany, backed by members of the Fabulous Five. A German
producer who had visited Jamaica, brought them to his country to promote reggae.
They were one of the first Jamaican groups to play reggae in continental Europe. 'We
were called the Reggaes, so I guess you could say we were the world's number one
reggae band!', recalls one of them in Chang & Chen,
Reggae Routes. The music on
this obscure album was influenced by the uptempo reggae style of 1969, but sounded
a little different. Griffiths sang excellent as always.
